Favor With God

“’Don’t be afraid, Mary,’ the angel told her, ‘for you have found favor with God!’” Luke 1:30 NLT.

What was it about Mary and Joseph that God would trust them with his one and only son? Mary was just a young girl who had never raised a child. And Joseph was only a carpenter. What made this couple, not even yet married, worthy to be entrusted with the most special child that would ever be born?

They did not have adequate means to provide the finer things in life. They were not well educated. They didn’t come from a powerful family and have any valuable connections. They were just a poor couple from Nazareth, which was certainly not a prestigious location. Why them?

Because God knew their hearts. They had sought him throughout their lives and cultivated a relationship with him. They were receptive to receive the angel’s message, though it was impossible to fathom.

I’m sure they made their fair share of mistakes, as all first-time parents do. They didn’t always understand him. Such as the time he remained teaching in the temple as a twelve year old boy and they didn’t know where he was. But they trusted in God, who told them that their child would be the Messiah.

I pray that God could find the same receptive heart within you and me, to hear and obey his voice. God judges by different standards: an obedient heart means far more to him than wealth or position. God looks at us with eyes that see not only who we are, but who we can be.

Of Wind and Sky

Sarah Gibson and her husband, Frank, are one of the common threads that tie the series OF WIND AND SKY together. Their characters were partly inspired by my parents, who were voices of faith and encouragement to me during the valleys I was led to walk in the last decade.

Sarah and Frank also represent who I want to be: a person who lives out her faith, shows compassion for those in need, and clings to God in times of suffering. Sarah's voice echoes the one in my head that tells me what I need to hear, whether I really want to hear it or not.

In THROUGH EVERY VALLEY, Sarah and Frank provide the widowed Vivian Hudson with a place to stay until she can find a wagon train to take her back east. Of course, when Frank arranges the sale of her cattle to the young man from Annapolis, Rob Hudson, Vivian finds a new reason to stay in Wyoming. Throughout her journey of learning to trust God again and to risk her heart to another man, Sarah is the voice of reason and hope.

In THE WHISPER OF DAWN, Sarah befriends Annette Hamilton, a young woman who is held captive to shame and fears the sins of her past will always haunt her. Not only are Sarah and Frank able to offer a cure for the Civil War Veteran, Jesse Stone, when his amputated leg becomes dangerously infected, they're able to lead Annette and Jesse to a greater and more lasting healing.

And finally, in AS EAGLES SOAR, the couple offers their home as a safe haven for Catherine Gibson in her time of need,

Chapter One

Spring, 1871

Wyoming Territory

Through the window of the stagecoach, a blur of windblown buffalo grass with a dark scrubby pine in the distance was all she could see. Catherine closed her eyes with hopes of calming the nausea churning in her stomach, but it only accentuated the lurching and pitching of the stagecoach as it rolled over the uneven road and further aggravated the situation.

Catherine leaned her head back against the leather seat, taking deep, slow breaths. They were going to be all right. They had to be.

Beside her, she felt her sister’s attention. “Do you feel sick?” Lydia worried.

Her seven year old sister had inherited their mother’s fair coloring, while Catherine had her father’s dark hair and brown eyes. Both girls had their mother’s petite build. Because she appeared delicate, Catherine was often presumed to be weak and fragile. But appearances could deceive, as Oliver Williams would soon discover.

Patting Lydia’s hand, Catherine assured her, “I’m fine. Just a little queasy.”

“Try to rest,” the child suggested in a maternal tone, resting her cheek against Catherine’s shoulder.

Smiling, Catherine squeezed her hand in gratitude. What would she do without Lydia?

The thought pierced her heart like a knife. She would never let him take Lydia away from her. Not without a fight. But hopefully it would never come to that. If out of sight means out of mind, then leaving Pendleton, Oregon would be their salvation. Please let him forget about me! she pleaded desperately in silent prayer.

Lydia was blissfully ignorant of their precarious situation. Catherine had made every effort to shield her from the dark and troubling details. Brushing a wayward strand of brown hair from her eyes, Catherine shook her head numbly.  How had her life come to this?

Slumping back against the cushion, Catherine closed her eyes and tried to still the worried thoughts that ricocheted wildly about in her mind. Finally exhaustion won over, and she nodded off.

When the stagecoach rattled into the rustic town of Weston, the call of the driver startled Catherine from her rest. She breathed a sigh of relief as the horses halted and the wheels of the coach slowed to a stop. Her teeth felt rattled in her skull and her entire being vibrated from the constant battering.

Lydia had also fallen asleep, her head sagging against Catherine’s shoulder.  Gently, Catherine lifted her arm to encircle her sister.

“Wake up, honey. We’re here,” she whispered.

Who is Catherine Gilbert

A frequently asked question is: Who is Catherine Gilbert? (one of the main characters in AS EAGLES SOAR). If you've read THE WHISPER OF DAWN, you were probably quick to recognize Bryan Hunt, but Catherine's name might seem only vaguely familiar. That's because she made her first appearance in the debut book of the series, THROUGH EVERY VALLEY, as the young woman on the Oregon Trail who caught the eye of Rob's best friend, Nate.

If you haven't read the novel, I don't want to give the story away, but Rob often thought of Catherine and wondered what had become of her. She's faced many more hardships and trials since we were originally introduced to her, and still has more to face. But God has a plan to bless her.

If you would like to share Catherine and Bryan's story, you can learn more about the final book in the OF WIND AND SKY series, here:
