If you're looking for summer reading and haven't picked up my latest series, MY BROTHER'S FLAG, here's what it's all about:

Book 1: ON GROUNDS OF HONOR

On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the division of the Civil War is an inescapable reality for many households. For the Turner brothers, it means choosing politics over blood. Although his younger brother goes south to join the Rebels, Jeremiah feels honor-bound to defend the Stars and Stripes even at the risk of meeting Charlie on the battlefield and facing a deeper conflict of loyalties.

His wife, Clara, is left behind at Laurel Hill to manage the farm with her father-in-law and his slaves. As the country is torn apart by opposing forces from within, Clara must find the strength to live in a world of uncertainty and change.

What began as an act of patriotic loyalty for Jeremiah will become a test of character and courage. And as the death toll climbs into the thousands, Clara clings to the desperate hope that her husband will come back to her alive. Before it ends, the war will take far more than they could have anticipated. But in the wake of its destruction, Jeremiah and Clara will learn that sometimes victory can only come through surrender.

Book 2: FOR THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM

On Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the division of the Civil War is an inescapable reality for many households. For the Turner brothers, it means choosing politics over blood. At the outbreak of the war, Charlie enlisted in the Confederate Army to defend States Rights while his older brother, Jeremiah, chose to fight for the Union.

Three years later, an emaciated prisoner of war, Charlie is determined to escape Point Lookout Prison and make his way home to face the conflict awaiting him there.

When Abigail Sterret discovers a wounded man near her home, she is moved by compassion at the sight of the gaunt Rebel soldier. Risking the consequences of aiding the enemy, Abigail shelters Charlie at Bloomingdale and nurtures him back to health. As his wounds heal, she discovers that Charlie carries more secrets than she supposed, and Abigail is more involved than she presumed.

And though war may end with the sweep of a pen, peace comes far less easily.

The Creative Mind

A window of insight into my overwhelming need to at all times be creative, as related by Pearl S. Buck. I stumbled upon this apt description years ago and have returned to it many times as a way to explain this "strange, unknown, inward urgency."
Picture
"The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this:
A human creature born abnormally, inhumanly sensitive.
To him... a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise,
a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy,
a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death.

Add to this cruelly delicate organism
the overpowering necessity to create, create, create -- so that
without the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings
or something of meaning, his very breath is cut off from him.

He must create, must pour out creation.
By some strange, unknown, inward urgency
he is not really alive unless he is creating
."

Did You Say A Children's Book? About Cats?

I know I've established a reputation as a historical fiction writer, but it's time to diversify! It will be some time before I can invest in the next novel, and so I've decided to publish a children's book which I made with my daughter, Grace Elizabeth, about ten years ago.

They say that God has a sense of humor, and that must be why He took someone as serious as I am and trapped me in "little kid land" for the last fourteen years. When my daughter was a toddler, I began working in a daycare, and as she grew, I moved up and worked as Pre-K teacher's aide.

Surrounded by children's book, and having a child of my who loved to read, I decided it would be a fun project for us to make a children's book with pictures of our cats. And so we did.

We went shopping and purchased all the necessary props, including doll clothes, furniture, and accessories. My father helped me to make a set with interchangeable walls so that I could feature different rooms. I meticulously made and painted what I could not buy, and earned myself the title of "eccentric crazy cat lady." But I was a pre-k teacher's aide at the time, so it kind of made sense.
It was a very sweet story about the special relationship between a mother and a daughter, as told by the mama cat. Ginger graciously played her part. Sweet Pea made a guest appearance as the grandmother, and the baby was played by a brand new kitten we had recently adopted, which Grace Elizabeth named "Sweet Bumble Bee."

Unfortunately, not long after the completion of our special book, little Bumble Bee began developing some health issues and was diagnosed with a fatal feline disease. He didn't live much longer. I was heartbroken and put the idea of publishing our children's book on the shelf.

Ten years later, I am employed as a nanny and the idea keeps coming back to me... And since I find an absence of creative output to be excruciating, I decided to pull out the old cat book, dust off the pages, and begin again.

I met with my amazingly talented graphic designer, Jody Christian, and handed over the old photos to her care. I'm excited to see what she is going to do with them!

Everyone knows how much I love cats, and my daughter and I often volunteer at the Animal Welfare League in Queenstown. As we spend time there, I've seen firsthand how dedicated the staff is to the well being of the animals in their care. It isn't just a job for them, it's a commitment and a lifestyle. It's not a nine to five job, and it's not an easy one. There is a lot of crap work involved, quite literally, as well as a  lot of heartbreak. And I would like to applaud their work and support it in whatever way I can. That is why a portion of the proceeds from this book will go to the AWL.
